It's what I've got

I will freely admit that this is an offbeat outfit - socks with open-toed heels and bright tights, pattern mixing, a gigantic slouchy sweater (from the 90's) - but I really like it. Sometimes I look at other blogs and feel disappointed that I don't do high-end designer looks, or that I don't do vintage fashion very well, or that I almost never look polished enough to work in an office - and then I have to remind myself that what I am good at when it comes to style is "bright and weird." And I know that's not a style that appeals to everyone, but it's what I've got.

The number one piece of advice I see successful fashion bloggers give to their fellow bloggers in interviews is "be yourself," and even though it's such a cliché at this point, I still like it. Obviously you need to take your surroundings into account - for instance, there are certain things you should and shouldn't wear to the office, church, funerals, weddings, etc. - but basically, I think everyone should wear whatever the heck they want. If you want to be weird, normal, bright, calm, neutral, experimental, urban, casual, dressy, high-maintenance, low-maintenance, whatever - I say go for it, even if that means you don't have as many followers as other blogs do, or (for those of you who aren't fashion bloggers) even if people give you funny looks because you're wearing something that's out of their comfort zone.

  1. First off, I just found your blog and I love it! I saw the name and then the sky in your photo, and my first thought was, "Looks familiar!" Then I read your About Me blurb and see you are in Portland! My hometown :-) I grew up in Beaverton but lived in Portland up until last year when I moved to Denver. So I TOTALLY understand the bright colors and happy outfits you are wearing to counter the skies :-)

Also, I love this outfit and don't see it as "weird." I love how you played with purple here! Beautiful.

    1. Thanks Marion! It's always nice to "meet" a fellow (if former) Portlander in blog-land!

  5. I love this look and your style in general. I like that it's a bit funky. I always want to be funky but suspect I'm too uptight to really make it work. Still, you inspire me to give it a shot at times, so, yes, please keep being you!

  9. I could not agree with you more! I think the whole beauty of fashion blogs is that you're free to experiment and you should! I love how you channeled this sentiment with your fun purple patterned look! Not too fussy or overworked!

  10. I've just stumbled across your blog and I love what you're wearing! Love the colours, patterns and textures and will be returning for my daily dose of colourful inspiration. Who wants to look like everyone else anyway?!

  11. I happen to love this outfit. I love the bright tights and the pattern mixing (that sweater alone is amazing, love the colours and detail around the neck) and even the socks with sandals because it works. It's genuine and real and it looks awesome. I'd probably be much less interested in your blog if it was all about brands or classy looks or whatnot.

And you know, most of my outfits are bright and weird too... and I work in an office :p I get some funny looks sometimes, but so long as I'm not wearing anything inappropriate in terms of revealing items, it's no real issue.
